The Industry

Why Do You Need Publishing?

Distribution puts your music on Spotify and Apple Music. Publishing makes sure you get paid for the underlying song (the composition), separate from the actual audio recording.

Mechanical Royalties

Generated whenever your song is reproduced, streamed, or downloaded. Distributors are focused on the recording side and don’t always collect 100% of mechanical royalties for songwriters. We track, match, and collect these royalties on your behalf.

📡

Performance Royalties

Earned when your music is played publicly — radio, TV, live shows, venues, and digital streaming. Even if you’re registered with ASCAP, BMI, or another PRO, a publisher helps ensure your works are properly registered and performance royalties are collected globally.

🌍

Global Registration

Without a publisher, your royalties can sit in “black box” accounts at collection societies around the world until they’re claimed. We register your catalog territory-by-territory so your money doesn’t get lost in the system.

Global Collection

One Publisher. Worldwide Reach.

Modern publishing isn’t just about radio. We monetize your compositions across streaming platforms, social media, UGC, and emerging formats — and collect from societies you may never have heard of.

  • Platform coverage – collections from services like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and more.
  • Society network – registrations with performance and mechanical societies across key territories so local royalties actually reach you.
  • Data-driven matching – we use works registrations, audio IDs, and fingerprinting to make sure your songs are correctly identified when they’re used.

  • 15% administration fee – our share is a clear administration percentage, not ownership of your songs.
  • 100% ownership – you retain full copyright in your compositions. We only administer and collect on your behalf for a limited term.
  • No surprise recoupments – no hidden “admin” or delivery fees quietly taken out of your statements.

Questions

FAQ for Independent Artists

Not sure if publishing is for you? Start here.

I already use DistroKid / Tunecore. Do I need this?
Yes. Distributors are mainly responsible for your recording royalties (masters) — what comes from streaming and downloads of the sound recording. Publishing collects for the songwriting side: mechanical, performance, and other royalties that distributors often miss, especially on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.
Do I lose ownership of my songs?
No. With SAP Music Group you retain 100% ownership of your compositions. We do not acquire your copyright. We act as your administrator and collection partner, with the right to collect and pay through your royalties for a defined term.
I’m already with ASCAP / BMI. Is that enough?
Registering with a PRO like ASCAP or BMI is a great first step, but it’s not the full picture. PROs mostly focus on performance royalties (radio, TV, live, some streaming). A publisher helps register your songs correctly, collects both performance and mechanical royalties, and chases income from foreign societies and digital platforms that a single PRO may not cover.
How often do I get paid?
Publishing royalties typically pay out quarterly, but it depends on the territory and the source (streaming, broadcast, neighboring rights, etc.). Once we receive funds and complete matching and reporting, we pay through your share according to our agreed schedule.
What if I have old songs already out?
Back catalog is often where unclaimed money lives. We can register your existing works, investigate historical usage where possible, and attempt to claim royalties that were never properly paid out. The sooner your catalog is properly administered, the less gets left on the table.
Are there any upfront fees?
Our model is administration-based. We earn when you earn. There are no surprise sign-up fees for basic publishing administration. Any optional creative or synch services are clearly outlined and agreed in advance.
